The novel opens with its main motif: ritual sacrifice in the bog, and from there the chilling image of humans turning against one whom they’ve identified as “other” hovers at the back of the readers’ minds as it quickly becomes clear that Sylvie and her mother is at the mercy of her violent and controlling father. ![]() ![]() Ghost Wall follows 17-year-old Sylvie who, with her father and mother, have joined a university’s experimental archaeology project to live as the ancient Britons did during the Iron Age. Sarah Moss’s stark and chilling short novel Ghost Wall was one of the last books I read in 2019 and it left me much to think about. ![]()
